SD Bullion Review: Is It a Legit and Reputable Company?

HOW WE ANALYZE

Affiliate Disclosure: The owners of this website may be paid to recommend Goldco Direct. The content on this website, including any positive reviews of Goldco Direct and other reviews, may not be neutral or independent.

SD Bullion launched in 2012 as the retail arm of the SilverDoctors.com news blog, started by two doctors who met in medical school. It now ranks among the three largest online precious metals sellers in the United States, with more than 2 million orders shipped to over 500,000 customers.

Headquarters moved to Fort Worth, Texas in January 2025. The vault and fulfillment operation sits on the Ohio and Michigan border. BBB accredited since April 2014 with an A+ grade, a six-time Inc. 5000 honoree, and #76 in the 2024 Digital Commerce 360 Top 1000. Read that identity clearly: this is a price-led bullion seller, not a retirement-account firm.

Give this a quick read first.

Your metal can do more than sit behind a locked door. Tucked into a retirement account, it grows with tax advantages and defends your savings from hits a regular purchase leaves you wide open to. The name for that arrangement: Gold IRA.

We put in the hours and came away with five companies we’d trust with our own family’s retirement money. Did SD Bullion earn a spot? Its position deserves a minute of your time.

Or request the free kit from the company we rate first. It walks through the whole process without a sales pitch.

Still weighing it? Keep reading.

Our Verdict

Rating: 4.0 out of 5. SD Bullion earns four stars on price, sourcing and transparency, and loses one on service accessibility and policy rigidity.

This seller is built for the buyer who knows precisely what they want, pays by check or wire, and takes delivery without incident. That buyer gets metal at premiums almost nobody in the industry beats.

If you have bought bullion before, you understand spot pricing, and you can commit to an order the moment you place it, the savings are real and repeatable across every purchase you make.

It fits poorly if you might need to change your mind. Orders bind on submission. Support closes Friday evening and reopens Monday. There is no chat window, no guided retirement conversation, and no salesperson walking you through options at your pace.

Someone opening a first precious metals IRA, or anyone who wants a human on standby during a large transaction, will find this frustrating.

The company is legitimate, the metal is genuine, and the pricing is honest. The friction is procedural, not ethical. Recommended for cost-focused buyers who read the policies before they click.

What Is SD Bullion?

SD Bullion is an online-only seller of physical gold, silver, platinum, palladium and copper. Metal ships to your home or moves straight into the company’s own depository at checkout.

Prices update live against spot and step down at quantity tiers, so the figure on screen is what you pay at that exact moment. Orders run through a standard shopping cart or over the phone.

The same operation runs in reverse. A buyback desk purchases metal back from customers, with payment issued after inspection. Alongside the retail business sit a self-directed IRA service and a segregated storage facility.

Here is the operational fact that matters most: there is no showroom, no counter, and no walk-in address anywhere. Every transaction happens online or by phone. The published Texas address is a private mailbox, not an office, and no in-person business of any kind takes place there.

What SD Bullion Charges, From Spot Price to Cancellation

The number on the product page is the starting point, not the total. Payment method, order size, and what happens after you click all move the final figure. All amounts below come from SD Bullion’s published policy pages.

The Premium You Pay Over Spot

SD Bullion posts live prices with quantity breaks, and its premiums sit at or near the bottom of the major US sellers.

Live pricing captured September 2026: a 2026 American Silver Eagle ran $78.88 for one to nineteen coins, dropping to $77.38 at 500 or more. A 2026 American Gold Eagle ran $4,686.36 for one to four, dropping to $4,657.39 at twenty or more. Those are check-and-wire figures.

The practical effect of a tier break: buying 20 Eagles at once beats buying them one a month.

Weekly Deals and the Price Match Guarantee

A rotating deals page carries low-premium offers that change weekly. SD Bullion will match a verified lower price on an identical, in-stock item from another legitimate seller.

That guarantee sets a floor. You are unlikely to badly overpay here. The limits matter, though: it covers comparable in-stock items from authorized sellers, not auction listings or liquidation sales. And you have to ask. The match is never applied automatically.

Shipping, Returns and the Fees Buyers Miss

ChargeAmount
Shipping and insuranceFree over $199, otherwise $9.95 flat
Return restocking5% or $35, whichever is higher
SD24K jewelry restocking10%
Return shippingBuyer pays
Undeliverable package storage$30 per month
Re-shipment (not SD’s fault)$30 minimum
Refused international order$75 re-processing plus return shipping
Depository outbound shipment$25 per transaction
Buyback payout by wire$30 (ACH free)

One correction worth making: several competing reviews report free shipping at $99 with a $7.77 flat rate. That does not match current published policy.

The 5% Cancellation Fee and Market Loss

This is the highest-stakes policy on the site and the most misreported one.

Submitting an order locks your price and creates a binding contract before any money moves. Miss the payment deadline or change your mind, and SD Bullion charges 5% of the order value, plus market loss (the difference if spot fell in the interim), plus collection costs.

Several competing reviews describe this as a flat $35 charge. That is wrong. The $35 is the floor on return restocking, an entirely separate fee. Real cancellation invoices documented in BBB filings range from $45 to $1,477.

How to Pay, and Where First-Time Buyers Get Tripped Up

Payment method is not a checkout detail at SD Bullion. It sets your price and decides whether your order completes at all.

Payment Methods and Their Ceilings

MethodMaximumCash discount
Bank wireNo cap (only option above $20,000)4%
Personal or cashier’s check$20,0004%
e-Check$10,0004%
Postal money order$9,9994%
Credit or debit card$5,000None
PayPal$500None
Bitcoin (BitPay)$250,0001% tier

Bank wire is unavailable below $2,500. Deadlines run 72 business hours for wires and seven business days for mailed checks.

Look at the structure. A $6,000 order cannot go on a card, cannot go on PayPal, and cannot go by wire under $2,500 rules only if smaller. Mid-size buyers get squeezed into check or e-check, and that is where the trouble starts.

The Payment Trap That Catches New Accounts

Not one of the top-ranking reviews for this company covers what follows. It shows up repeatedly in the BBB record.

A new buyer chooses e-check to capture the 4% discount and links a bank account through Plaid. The payment fails. SD Bullion’s e-check runs on Image Cash Letter, not ACH, and Chase, PNC and U.S. Bank customers are no longer eligible for Plaid linking on this system.

Now the problem compounds. The price locked when the order was submitted, before the payment method was ever tested. A failed setup is now a binding contract. Bank wire, the obvious fallback, is not offered below $2,500.

BBB filing 24523459 documents this sequence. A February 2026 BBB reviewer was billed $45 and threatened with collections over an order that never shipped.

Shipping, Insurance, and the Three-Day Window

Shipping here is fast under normal conditions and slow under stress. What matters more is the claims process, since that is where policy meets an unhappy customer.

How Long Delivery Actually Takes

Published figures: orders enter the shipping queue one to three business days after payment clears. Metal ships by USPS, UPS or FedEx at SD Bullion’s discretion, typically arriving five to ten business days after dispatch.

The honest counterweight comes from customers. During the silver demand surge in early 2026, buyers documented waits of three weeks and longer, often with no ship date offered at all.

One structural warning: a pre-sale item holds your entire order until it arrives. Packaging is discreet, with a pseudonym return address.

When the Insurance Stops Covering You

Coverage is fully insured with real carve-outs. It becomes void if you waived signature with your carrier, if anyone other than the addressee signs (a neighbor or building manager counts), or if the package went to a UPS Store, FedEx Store, locker or mailbox address.

Coverage caps at $10,000 via USPS First Class and $25,000 via Priority. A large order routed the wrong way is underinsured.

Then the timing. Damage, missing items and non-delivery must be reported within three business days of delivery. Support is closed Saturday and Sunday. A Friday delivery leaves you Monday through Wednesday. BBB filings include claims denied purely on late reporting.

Sending an Order Back

Returns must be reported within three business days of confirmed delivery, by phone or email, or the claim is permanently waived.

Items go back in original packaging and condition. Photos may be requested. Refund or replacement is SD Bullion’s call, not yours. Restocking runs 5% or $35, whichever is higher, plus buyer-paid return shipping and possible market loss.

Fees are never waived for price moves, change of mind, misread product specs, carrier delays or refused deliveries. Acid-tested or cleaned items are not accepted back.

Selling Metal Back to SD Bullion

Most buyers price the purchase and ignore the exit. The exit is half the transaction, and it is where spreads quietly eat returns.

How the Buyback Works, Step by Step

Call 1-800-294-8732 to lock a price. There is no online quote and no online sell checkout. Ship the metal. Payment issues one to three business days after inspection, free by ACH or $30 by wire.

SD Bullion video-records every incoming parcel.

The packing rules carry your insurance, so follow them exactly:

  • New, unmarked boxes, double-boxed
  • All tubes taped closed
  • Label on both inner and outer box
  • Orders above 500 ounces split into separate parcels
  • Handed to a staffed UPS or USPS counter, receipt retained

Third-party mailing centers, drop boxes and self-serve kiosks void the claim entirely. Depository and IRA holders can liquidate without shipping anything.

What the Posted Bid Prices Leave Out

Credit first: publishing live buyback bids is more openness than most sellers manage. You can see your exit price before you buy, which is genuinely useful.

Now the footnote. Those posted bids are quoted at silver above 500 ounces, gold above 10, platinum above 10 and palladium above 20. The minimum to sell is 40 ounces of silver and 2 ounces of gold.

See the gap? A wide band of ordinary sellers clears the minimum, falls short of the quoted tier, and receives less than the screen showed them.

From the September 2026 capture, gold bids ran roughly 1.4% to 2.6% under spot, genuinely competitive. Silver ran 8% to 12% under. Same company, same page, same day. Recalculate against current spot before you commit.

Buyback cancellations carry the same 5% fee plus market loss. You carry transit risk unless you use SD Bullion’s paid label and follow the packaging rules to the letter.

Your Nest Egg Wasn’t Built for an Era Like This

The savings you spent decades building deserve more than paper assets and dollar exposure. A Gold IRA puts physical metal behind your retirement and keeps the same tax treatment you already know. Click your state to get started.

Products, Storage, and the Gold IRA

The catalog is narrower than the giants but priced better. Storage and retirement accounts sit alongside it as add-on services rather than the main event.

What SD Bullion Actually Sells

Gold, silver, platinum, palladium and copper as coins, rounds and bars. Pre-1933 US gold, Morgan and Peace dollars, 90% junk silver, Goldbacks, SD24K jewelry and accessories. House lines include MintCertified, the Truth Coin Series, Commander Series and Una and the Lion.

Mints carried include the US Mint, Royal Canadian, British Royal, Perth, Austrian, Argor-Heraeus, Valcambi and Scottsdale.

Now the detail buyers miss. Many bestsellers sell as “Design Our Choice”: randomly selected secondary-market pieces that may show wear, toning or handling marks. This is the single largest source of product complaints in the BBB record.

SD Depository and What Storage Costs

The vault is SD Bullion’s own facility on the Ohio and Michigan border. Storage is segregated and insured by Lloyd’s of London.

Rates run 0.39% annually on silver and 0.29% on gold and platinum, with a $9.99 monthly minimum and no prorated refunds. First three months free for new accounts, excluding IRAs. No minimum holding, $199 order minimum to store, signed contract required by phone.

Customers may visit their own metal by appointment, which is rare in this business.

Two corrections. Competing reviews list storage starting at $19.99 monthly, which is wrong. And random-design items are logged under generic SKUs, with itemized identification normally carrying a fee starting at $75.

The Gold IRA and Its Missing Numbers

The pitch is “3-in-1”: SD Bullion acts as seller, coordinates the custodian, and stores metal in its own IRS-approved depository. Most accounts open and fund in about six business days.

Eligibility covers traditional, Roth, SEP, Simple and Solo IRAs plus 401(k) rollovers, with IRS purity thresholds of .995 gold, .999 silver, and .9995 platinum and palladium.

Here is what competitors gloss over. The custodian is never named anywhere on the site, on a page built around a “no middlemen” argument. And no setup, custodian or annual administration fee is published, on a page promising no hidden charges.

There is no IRA kit, and SD Bullion’s own page criticizes rival firms for using kit lead-capture forms. If retirement metal is your goal rather than delivery, check out our recommended gold IRA companies and compare published fee schedules side by side.

Who Runs SD Bullion, and Is It Safe to Use?

“Is SD Bullion legit” is the highest-volume question people ask about this company. The answer is yes, and several competing reviews still get the basic facts wrong.

Leadership and Where the Company Actually Sits

Dr. Tyler Wall co-founded SD Bullion in 2012 and served as CEO for roughly the first decade. He is now President of the Board. Chase Turner is the current CEO.

Headquarters moved to Fort Worth, Texas in January 2025, from Toledo, Ohio. The published Texas address is a private mailbox, not an office. Check payments do not go there, and no in-person business happens there.

The vault and fulfillment center sits on the Ohio and Michigan border, with the address deliberately unpublished.

Several competing reviews still list Ottawa Lake, Michigan as headquarters and name Wall as CEO. Trustpilot’s own business listing carries a stale address and a phone number missing a digit.

The Safety Record, and What the A+ Grade Covers

Fourteen years trading. BBB accredited since April 2014. EY Entrepreneur of the Year 2023 for the founder. Six Inc. 5000 listings. #76 in Digital Commerce 360’s 2024 Top 1000. Metal sourced from mints and authorized wholesalers rather than open marketplaces, which keeps counterfeit risk very low.

The counterweight you deserve: the Business Consumer Alliance grades the company C, with a 0% complaint resolution index, after SD Bullion left the single complaint filed there unanswered. It is not a BCA member.

Legitimacy and service quality are separate questions. This company scores well on the first.

What Customers Report After the Sale

Four platforms, four different pictures. Averaging them destroys the useful information. All figures date to September 2026 and counts move weekly.

Where the Ratings Agree and Where They Split

PlatformScoreVolume
BBB4.47/5, A+ grade722
Trustpilot4.1/53,113
Shopper Approved4.8/5 224,636
Business Consumer AllianceC grade, 0% resolution1

The split has a mechanical explanation. Shopper Approved surveys buyers at checkout and shortly after delivery, capturing routine satisfaction. Trustpilot and BBB reviews are self-initiated weeks later, usually once something has gone wrong.

That timing gap produces 4.8 against 4.0 without either number being false. The BCA C grade rests on one unanswered complaint and should never be read as a five-star score.

The Number Behind the A+ Rating

I read the primary record rather than the average, and one figure reframes everything.

Across three years, 107 BBB complaints were filed, 44 closed in the last twelve months. Of those 107, exactly 15 are marked Resolved. Ninety-six are marked Answered.

Those labels are not interchangeable. Answered means the company replied and the customer either rejected the outcome or never confirmed satisfaction. So SD Bullion responds to nearly everything, usually inside one to three days, with detailed and policy-literate replies, and the customer accepts the result roughly 14% of the time.

BBB states plainly that customer reviews are not used to calculate the letter grade.

Complaint mix: 29 product, 25 delivery, 23 customer service, 18 billing.

The two loudest themes are cancellation invoices on orders that never shipped, and hold times running past two hours during demand surges. Balanced against two consistent praises: price leadership, and named representatives who fix things properly once a buyer reaches one.

How SD Bullion Compares to Other Online Dealers

FactorSD BullionJM BullionAPMEX
Premium levelLowestMiddleHighest
Catalog depthNarrowestWideWidest
Free shippingOver $199Over $199Over $199
Return window3 business days5 days7 calendar days

Here is a point almost nobody covers. JM Bullion and BGASC are both owned by publicly traded A-Mark Precious Metals. SD Bullion is founder-led and independent.

If you care about spreading counterparty exposure across more than one corporate parent, that distinction is worth real money.

The premium saving justifies the tighter policies on planned, straightforward purchases. It stops justifying them the moment your order is complicated, urgent, or likely to change.

Read These Four Policies Before Your First Order

Read the cancellation and claims terms before you read a single price. I know that reverses how anyone shops. Do it anyway.

Four things to confirm before clicking rather than after:

  • Your order binds the instant it is submitted, before payment clears
  • The claims and return window is three business days, not calendar days
  • Support closes at weekends, so a Friday problem waits until Monday
  • Your payment method sets both your price and whether the order can complete

None of this is concealed. All of it lives on the site. It simply is not where your eyes go when a low premium has your attention.

The lowest premiums in the category come attached to the strictest deadlines in the category. Both are true at once, and you should know both before you commit a dollar.

FAQ About SD Bullion

Yes, but only transactions that meet IRS Form 8300 thresholds, plus buyback transactions meeting 1099-B requirements. Ordinary retail purchases below those thresholds are not reported.

SD Bullion maintains a reporting page covering the specifics. The obligation attaches to transaction type, never to simply owning metal.

Yes, sometimes. Tax depends entirely on your delivery state, and many states exempt investment-grade bullion outright.

Metal sent to SD Depository in Michigan is not charged Michigan sales tax on gold, silver or platinum, though tax may apply later if it ships out. Check the sales-tax-by-state page first.

No. SD Bullion publishes only a corporate mailbox in Fort Worth, Texas, and keeps its fulfillment and vault address private. There is no local pickup and no walk-in service anywhere in the country.

One exception exists: depository storage customers may book an appointment to view their own holdings.

Yes, to selected countries, quoted at checkout by product and destination, with some items excluded. Buyers cover duties and taxes.

International orders pay by card, BitPay or wire only. A refused or returned parcel triggers return shipping plus a $75 re-processing charge with no exceptions.

Yes. Guest checkout is available and there is no minimum order size. Registering adds order tracking, shipping status and saved purchase history.

First-time e-check buyers still need to link a bank through Plaid either way, and identity documents are sometimes requested on larger orders.

No. Inventory comes from mints and authorized wholesalers rather than open marketplaces, every incoming buyback parcel is video-recorded, and counterfeit reports are effectively absent from the complaint record.

Condition complaints about scuffing, toning and wear on secondary-market pieces are common, but condition and authenticity are separate matters.
