What It Actually Costs to Open a Goldco Gold IRA

Before you commit, here’s exactly what you’ll pay. Goldco publishes its fee structure transparently, which is one reason it consistently ranks at the top of our research.

The required minimum purchase at Goldco to start a gold IRA is $25,000. Goldco’s preferred Custodian charges a flat annual account service fee which includes a one-time IRA account set-up fee of $50. as well as a $30 wire fee. Annual maintenance is $100, and storage is $150 for segregated storage or $100 for non-segregated storage.

Fees for gold storage and custodianship can vary depending on the company you select to handle these services (required by the IRS, as all IRA assets must be managed by a custodian). Depending on the Custodian, storage fees can range from $10 to $60 per month, or as a percentage of assets, from 0.35% to 1% annually. Goldco does not charge any storage fees for cash transactions over $25,000.

What Calculator Users Are Saying

Three savers who ran the tool before picking a precious metals company. Here’s what they found.

Robert M., calculator user from Phoenix, Arizona

I had about $22,000 saved and was ready to sign with the first company that emailed me. Plugged my number into the calculator and saw right away that some top-rated companies required $25K or even $50K minimums. The tool showed me which options I actually qualified for. Saved me from a costly mistake.

Robert M. · Phoenix, AZ · Calculator user
Linda K., calculator user from Cincinnati, Ohio

What I liked? This wasn’t a vanity tool. It surfaced real differences between five companies with A+ BBB ratings, years of operating history, and recognition from publications I trust. Comparing minimum purchase amounts and fee structures side by side was the moment I realized the right company depends entirely on my specific savings amount.

Linda K. · Cincinnati, OH · Calculator user
James T., calculator user from Denver, Colorado

I was skeptical at first. Figured all gold IRA companies were basically the same. The calculator’s 20-year projection at gold’s historical rate showed me the math on my own numbers, and the comparison made it obvious that fee structures and minimum requirements differ a lot. Picking the wrong one could have quietly cost me thousands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I use a Gold IRA calculator before choosing a company?

A calculator gives you a baseline for your own numbers. Your purchase amount, your time horizon, and how the math plays out at gold’s historical 7.9% annual rate. Without running those numbers first, savers often pick a company that doesn’t match their actual amount, then discover later that minimum purchase requirements or fee structures don’t fit their situation. Running the numbers takes two minutes and shows you which of these five companies you can even qualify for.

How does this tool help me find the best Gold IRA company for me?

The calculator pairs your inputs with each company’s minimum purchase requirement and fee structure. A $15,000 saver and a $75,000 saver have very different best matches. Minimums range from $10,000 (American Hartford Gold, Birch Gold) up to $50,000 (Augusta Precious Metals). The tool shows you which companies you qualify for and which match your goals, so you’re not guessing.

Why these five companies specifically?

Each company on the list shares three traits: an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, years of operating history (Birch Gold dates back to 2003, Goldco has operated for over a decade), and recognition from publications like Money Magazine, Forbes, and Investopedia. They were selected for credibility, complaint history, and customer experience. Not advertising spend.

What inputs matter most for an accurate estimate?

Your purchase amount and time horizon drive the biggest swings in the projection. The historical rate slider lets you see conservative scenarios (5% per year) against more optimistic ones (12%). Annual contribution caps at the 2026 IRS limit of $8,600 (for those eligible for the $1,100 catch-up amount). All four inputs work together to produce an illustrative scenario. Not a guaranteed forecast.

What if I skip the calculator and go straight to a company?

You can. But you’d be making a five-figure decision without seeing the math first. Common consequences? Picking a company whose minimum is too high for your amount (leading to a delayed or canceled rollover), missing bonus silver thresholds available on qualified orders, or selecting a fee structure that quietly erodes returns over time. The calculator surfaces these tradeoffs before they cost you.
