This American Bullion review draws on the company’s own FAQ and fee pages, STRATA Trust and Delaware Depository documentation, more than 350 customer ratings across five independent platforms, and public regulatory records.

American Bullion opened in 2009 in Los Angeles, founded by two former commodity traders, Nevtan Akcora and Orkan Ozkan, right after the 2008 crash sent savers hunting for something they could hold. The firm helped popularize the phrase “Gold IRA” and built its entire model around teaching first-time buyers how a rollover works.
It became the first company in its category to accept Bitcoin, back in 2013. Education and paperwork handling remain the pitch. Everything else, pricing included, happens over the phone.
One question before you settle on anything.
Your metal doesn’t have to sit locked in a drawer. Kept inside a retirement account, gold can build up with tax breaks and guard your nest egg in a way a straight purchase never will. People call this arrangement a Gold IRA.
After real digging, five firms earned a spot we’d feel fine handing our own family’s retirement money to. So where did American Bullion land? Worth a look before you decide anything.

Our Verdict
American Bullion fits the saver with $50,000 or more sitting in an old 401(k) or IRA who wants someone calm on the phone walking them through custodian forms without a hard sell. The long record and clean complaint history back that up.
Two trade-offs are real. The promotional threshold shuts out smaller savers, and no published pricing means you cannot compare premiums without a phone call.
Best suited for: mid-to-large rollover investors who value hand-held guidance over midnight comparison shopping.
What Is American Bullion?

Operationally, American Bullion converts qualified retirement money into physical metal. That covers traditional and Roth IRAs, 401(k)s, 403(b)s, 457(b)s, TSPs, pensions and TIAA CREF accounts.
An in-house IRA Processing Department handles the transfer paperwork start to finish, often on a single conference call with your existing plan administrator.
Two outside firms do the heavy lifting behind the scenes. STRATA Trust Company administers the self-directed account. Delaware Depository stores the bars and coins.
You can buy metal outside a retirement account too, with insured delivery to your door. Either way, there’s no online cart and no live price feed. You call, a specialist quotes you, and you decide on the spot.
American Bullion Fees and Pricing Explained
Be careful with fee numbers you find online, including mine. STRATA and Delaware Depository set most of these charges, not American Bullion, and they change. Get the current schedule in writing before funding anything.
The company’s own FAQ lays out three STRATA tiers:
| Plan | Setup | Annual |
| Precious Metals IRA | $25 | $160 |
| Basic IRA | $0 | $200 |
| Flex IRA | $0 | $275 |
Third-party sources quote bundled totals anywhere from $75 to $290 per year, which tells you how much the storage component moves the number. Accounts above $100,000 or using segregated storage pay more.
Tip: Ask for the all-in annual figure that includes storage, not just the custodian line.
The First-Year Fee Waiver (and Its Catch)

American Bullion promotes free storage and $0 custodian fees for year one. Third-party coverage ties the full waiver to accounts around $50,000 and up, worth roughly $290 to $350 in savings.
That’s a genuine perk. It’s still a one-year perk. Year two arrives at full price, and that’s the number that compounds across a 20-year retirement horizon.
Tip: Do the math on a ten-year hold, not the first twelve months.
What About Product Pricing and Spreads?
No coin prices appear anywhere on the site. Every quote requires a specialist on the line, which means you cannot benchmark against a competitor’s posted price without calling both.
The spread is your real cost. Standard bullion typically carries something in the 7% to 10% range over spot. Proof and semi-numismatic coins can run past 20%.
One reader emailed me after selling proof eagles he’d bought years earlier. The buyback landed near spot. The 20-plus percent he paid on top never came back.
Tip: Ask this exact question: “What is the premium over spot on this coin, and what would you pay me for it today?”
The $50,000 Minimum vs. the $10,000 Minimum: What’s Real?
Two numbers circulate, and most write-ups pick one without explaining the difference. Both are accurate. They answer different questions.
The company’s FAQ recommends a $10,000 minimum rollover, framed as enough to absorb setup and annual costs sensibly. That’s the practical floor for opening an account.
The $50,000 figure is the threshold for the first-year fee waiver promotion. Below it, you can still open an account. You just pay the fees from day one.
So a $15,000 rollover is workable. It won’t be free.
Products and Precious Metals You Can Buy
American Bullion carries all four IRS-permitted metals, plus pre-1933 US and European coins for collectors who buy outside a retirement account. Everything is physical. No ETFs, no certificates, no paper claims.
- Gold: American Eagle, Proof Eagle, Gold Buffalo, Canadian Maple Leaf, Austrian Philharmonic, Credit Suisse, UBS and PAMP Suisse bars
- Silver: American Eagle, Proof Eagle, Maple Leaf, Philharmonic, PAMP Suisse and Johnson Matthey bars, Peace dollars
- Platinum and palladium: American Eagle, Maple Leaf, PAMP Suisse bars
IRA-eligible items must clear IRS purity thresholds: 99.5% for gold, 99.9% for silver, 99.95% for platinum and palladium. Collectible and pre-1933 coins generally do not qualify and belong in a direct cash purchase.
Bullion vs. Proof Coins: Why the Difference Matters
Standard bullion tracks metal content. Premiums stay low, liquidity stays high, and any dealer in the country will bid close to spot for an American Eagle.
Proof coins add collector packaging, lower mintages and a much larger markup. Reselling them depends on finding someone who cares about the grade, not just the ounce.
Proof upselling is the most repeated complaint against American Bullion across Google and Yelp. That’s not an accusation of fraud. It’s a reason to ask what you’re paying for.
How to Open a Gold IRA With American Bullion

The sequence is straightforward:
- Request the free Gold Guide or speak with a specialist by phone.
- Open a self-directed IRA with STRATA Trust.
- Fund it through a direct rollover, trustee transfer, or cash contribution.
- Choose IRS-approved metals with your specialist.
- Metals ship to Delaware Depository and log into the vault, usually within about seven business days.
One thing I respect: the account forms and a setup checklist sit on the public site. You can read the paperwork before anyone calls you, which is rarer in this industry than it should be.
Rollovers themselves often complete in three to five business days once your current administrator signs off.
Your Nest Egg Wasn’t Built for an Era Like This
The savings you spent decades building deserve more than paper assets and dollar exposure. A Gold IRA puts physical metal behind your retirement and keeps the same tax treatment you already know. Click your state to get started.
Storage, Custodian, and Security
Two separate companies handle two separate jobs. STRATA Trust keeps the account records, reporting and IRS compliance. Delaware Depository holds the physical metal, with Brink’s available as a secondary vault option.
You choose segregated storage (your specific coins, stored apart) or commingled storage (your holdings pooled by type, at lower cost). Segregated costs more and shows up on the higher annual fee tier.
Delaware Depository carries a $1 billion all-risk policy through Lloyd’s of London, Class 3 vaults, round-the-clock monitoring and dedicated security staff. Account holders can arrange a visit by appointment.
IRS rules bar you from keeping IRA metal at home. That restriction is not negotiable.
A Word on the Home-Storage Gold IRA Page
American Bullion still hosts content describing an LLC-based home-storage arrangement. A 2021 US Tax Court decision effectively closed that door, and the taxpayers in that case owed back taxes plus penalties.
Storing IRA metal in your house or personal safe deposit box triggers a taxable distribution, with an early withdrawal penalty if you’re under 59½. Treat that page as history, not strategy.
American Bullion’s Buyback and Selling Process
Selling starts with a call. American Bullion acts as the third-party buyer, since self-directed custodians like STRATA cannot serve as dealers. The company completes the custodian paperwork, and cash typically lands in the account within a few days.
From there you take a distribution, buy a different asset, or transfer the money elsewhere. The team handles required minimum distribution liquidations for account holders past RMD age.
Here’s the nuance most write-ups skip. There’s no formally guaranteed buyback price. The transaction agreement states the company has never failed to offer repurchase, which is reassuring history, not a contractual promise. Sales are final once metals are purchased, and buyback pricing sits below spot.
Tip: Get the buyback terms in writing the week you buy, not the week you need cash.
American Bullion Ratings and Customer Reviews
Figures below are current and may change over time.
| Platform | Rating | Reviews |
| BBB | 4.58/5 (A+) | 12 |
| Trustpilot | 4.9/5 | 218 |
| TrustLink | 5.0/5 | 57 |
| Yelp | 3.4/5 | 22 |
| 3.9/5 | 53 |
Look at the pattern, not the average. Platforms where retirement customers post after a completed rollover cluster near perfect. Open local platforms sit a full point and a half lower.
That gap usually reflects two different customer types: the guided rollover saver versus the direct buyer waiting on a shipment. Both experiences are real. BBB shows zero formal complaints in its three-year window.
What Customers Praise

Three themes repeat across every platform. Reps get named individually and thanked for patience, which suggests the low-pressure approach is training, not luck.
Rollover execution earns steady praise. One reviewer with 401(k) accounts scattered across 30 years described being walked through each former employer one at a time until everything consolidated.
Several comparison shoppers reported American Bullion came in with lower premiums and setup costs than competitors they’d priced, naming Goldco and Noble Gold. Posted paperwork helps too.
Common Complaints and How Serious They Are
Slow delivery on large insured physical orders comes up most, with waits stretching two to three weeks during heavy market periods. Annoying, not disqualifying.
The proof-coin complaints carry more weight, since they cost money rather than patience. Customers steered toward high-premium coins later discovered buyback offers near spot.
There’s a small regulatory footnote: a past Minnesota Department of Commerce registration matter, resolved with a modest civil penalty.
An older BBB complaint from an elderly buyer’s family over coin markups was withdrawn after resolution. Real issues. Neither suggests a pattern of harm.
Is American Bullion Legit or a Scam?

Yes, legitimate. Fifteen-plus years operating, BBB accreditation since 2011 with an A+ rating, and zero unresolved formal complaints on file.
The company holds listed dealer status with the US Mint and Registered Bullion DNA Dealer status with the Royal Canadian Mint. Memberships include the American Numismatic Association, ICTA, PCGS and NGC.
Public records searches turned up no active lawsuits or state enforcement actions as of early 2026. The Minnesota registration matter closed years ago and involved paperwork, not customer losses.
Questions to Ask Before You Call American Bullion
Since pricing lives entirely on the phone, your leverage comes from arriving prepared. Write these down and refuse to be rushed past them.
- The current STRATA and Delaware fee schedule, in writing
- The exact premium over spot on bullion versus proof for each recommended coin
- Your total year-two cost after the waiver expires
- Buyback terms, timing and typical pricing relative to spot
- Whether your storage is segregated or commingled, and the cost difference
Our job at ResourcefulSelling is handing you the questions. If a phone-first process without posted prices doesn’t suit how you shop, it makes sense to find other trusted gold IRA companies and compare quotes side by side before committing a dollar.
American Bullion for Direct Buyers vs. IRA Rollovers

These are two different companies wearing one name. The rollover path gets the attention: a dedicated processing department, custodian coordination, depository storage, and repeated hand-holding through forms most people have never seen.
The direct cash purchase path is lighter touch. You call, buy, and metal arrives insured at your door. No custodian, no annual account fee, no waiting for a vault to log your shipment, and no IRS restriction on holding it yourself.
Retirement savers moving an existing account belong on the first path. Buyers who simply want coins in a safe belong on the second, with realistic expectations about shipping speed on larger orders.
